Shelf Measurement & Lighting Checklist

Before you begin

The depth zones below are approximate working guidance, not an industry standard. Product dimensions, door swing, hinges, face frames, your reach, and your sightline matter more than the label assigned to a zone.

Measure the usable space

Measure the narrowest clear openingâ€”not the nominal cabinet size.

Choose a working zone

Use this as a starting point, then test it against the actual shelf.

Shallow, approximately under 12 in: visibility is usually easier; check vertical waste. Working, approximately 12â€“16 in: test whether a second row remains reachable. Deep, approximately over 16 in: test visibility, access, pull-out clearance, and lighting.

Test the real task

A product can fit on paper and still be awkward to use.

Decide whether lighting is part of the fix

Only add lighting when it improves shelf or cabinet usability.

I cannot read labels at the back under normal room lighting. Front items cast shadows over the working area. A light can be mounted without blocking doors, shelves, or removal paths. I checked power method, recharge access, heat guidance, product certification, and current recalls.
